Dr.-Ing. Rudolf Hell (*1901 – †2002)

Fax, scanner, electromechanical engraving

Over 85 years of impressive pioneering successes from HELL

The products and solutions from HELL Gravure Systems are shaped by the passion and pioneering spirit of founder Dr. Rudolf Hell. Starting with the founding of the company in 1929, his tremendous thirst for knowledge enriched the graphic arts industry with countless fundamental solutions that quickly became industry standards. One key development was the Klischograph (1951), the first electronically controlled engraving machine for letterpress blocks. Its subsequent development into the HelioKlischograph (1961), the first electromechanical scanner and engraver, represented a dramatic advance in gravure.

Further groundbreaking developments included in 1965 the Chromagraph DC 300 drum scanner, long one of the most successful professional scanners. At the same time, Dr. Rudolf Hell revolutionized typesetting by publicly unveiling electronic typesetting with digital storage. His inventive spirit also raised the bar in telegraphy. As early as 1929, he invented a highly robust teleprinter – the celebrated Hell-Writer. This was developed into the first KF 108 fax machine, produced in large quantities by Siemens. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, the press used the first transportable wirephoto equipment from HELL.

To this day, HELL continues to develop pioneering solutions in the engraving industry such as offset-gravure conversion (1981), TIFF direct engraving (1997), the most successful engraving machine of all time, the HelioKlischograph K500 (2000), direct laser engraving for gravure and embossing with Cellaxy (2005), direct laser engraving for letterpress printing with the PremiumSetter (2006), and the HelioSprint III 12 kHz high-performance engraving system (2008).
